PROJECT

The University of Tasmania – Inveresk

The judges recognise the relocation of the University of Tasmania to a heritage site next to Launceston city centre as a landmark transformation in Launceston's urban landscape. As a catalyst for urban redevelopment, the University’s Inveresk precinct exemplifies how education precincts can spearhead urban rejuvenation, embedding sustainability, truth-telling, design excellence, heritage, and innovation at its core.

The judges were impressed by the reuse of heritage spaces and the sensitive integration of new buildings combining sustainable design and functionality for a modern educational facility.

Significant and meaningful levels of engagement have clearly influenced this exceptional outcome. Meaningful engagement with First Nations and minority groups has resulted in spaces that are authentic and culturally meaningful.

The judges acknowledge that the redevelopment and reuse of this precinct is clearly a complex undertaking, with an outstanding result and truly a great place.
