Growing up with an architect working in urban design, I’ve always had an interest in the built environment. However, it wasn’t until I returned to uni (after many years of travel) to study sustainable land management that I came to recognise the power and potential of the discipline of planning in delivering better outcomes. I haven’t regretted my choice of planning for one day – the variety, fluidity and importance of the work we can do as planners still inspires me.

Probably like most planners, the thing that drew me to planning was that I had strong interests in geography and the environment. Planning allowed me to pursue both of these interests, so I studied planning at university and continued my passion for geography by completing some specialised geography studies.

On reflection, becoming a planner was the result of a suite of early influences in my life. My mum had studied architecture and geography, then became a librarian, meaning we had lots of books on architecture, design, and the environment. I also had an intrinsic passion for the environment, which led to a love of geography. My upbringing also gave me a strong desire to contribute to my community. So, when I was looking at uni courses, just post-recession (and Victorian council amalgamations), planning was obvious – a likely job and working in a field I loved..

.I studied geography for a term at secondary school and really enjoyed the introduction to natural systems, landscape and the like and I was particularly interested in how people used the cities that were being built. I spoke to a few people and pursued planning over landscape and urban design. Done well, planning had the ability to share the city and its opportunities with its occupants for a net community benefit. It still has that ability. At RMIT I had some good lecturers who fuelled this interest and my first job at the then South Melbourne Council added a fascination with architecture and the deal was done.
