Assessing and understanding local character is arguably one of the most contentious aspects of planning. This workshop clarifies the concept of 'local character' and 'desired future character' and provides a simple framework by which planners can begin to understand these issues. It uses photographs to show different elements that contribute to local character and encourages debate on whether these developments 'respect' context and neighbourhood character.

The session will also provide a summary of policy and recent guidance related to local character and explore critical Land & Environment Court decisions on the topic.

Learning Outcomes:

• Appreciate what context and local character means in a planning context;
• Develop an understanding of the basic elements that contribute to local character;
• Discuss the role of context and neighbourhood character studies in local policies and in the assessment process; and
• Learn about how to 'respect' neighbourhood character and how to 'respond' to a specific context.
