PPF content for climate change adaptation is narrow and does not recognise that cllimate and sustainability are core concern for agricultural producers who fund agricultural research into climate change adaptation and sustainability.
Planning Guidelines for renewable energy provide little guidance in relation to how to consider the decision guidelines within the farming zone.
This course is aimed at providing a basic understanding of the different commodities and productions systems that operate within a range of climatic conditions. It provides information on how agricultural industry is investing in research and deveopment so that to reduce emissions intensity while continuing to produce high quality and affordable food and fibre in a sustainable manner. It aims to give planners confidence as to about agricultural innovations so that you can make triple bottom line assessments?
In relation to renewable energy the agriculture sector understanding it is critical to global adaptation. Not every site may be suited to transition from agriculture to energy generation and food security can be threatened by unplanned loss of agricultural land to energy and transmission.
The course aims to provide information on the issues identified in the Strategic Agricultural Land Project so that planners can build an understanding of how to better plan for renewable energy that value adds to agriculture and how planners can contribute to VicGrid in relation to the factors that should be considered in state-wide strategic planning for a renewable energy future.
The course aims to improve understanding that it is possible to deliver renewable energy without significant loss of sustainable agriculture with more careful design and considerations.
Designed For
Planners and rural practitioners.
Learning Outcomes
- Gain a broad understanding of different agricultural commodities and how they are addressing climate change.
- Understand materials and bodies that can assist you in understanding the production system context to planning applications.
- Understand how to understand potential impacts of renewable energy on agricultural production, manufacturing and infrastructure investment
- Understand the context to assess renewable energy proposals against wider PPF objectives and purposes of zones
- Improve understanding of co-design opportunities so that renewable energy is additional to agricultural production
- Understand how the planning system can be improved to giver greater guidance to energy transformation that considers the consequences of land use change and allows community input into that change.
