THE VALUE OF PLANNING … for resilience and adaption
2020 has seen the need for Australians to develop skills in resilience and adaption in a multitude of ways.
Planning professionals are able to impact the built environment which in turn may help or hinder the bounce back that people have in their recovery from natural disasters or medical crises.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how important access to open space and the need for appropriate distancing is within our society. Whereas the bushfire crisis at the beginning of 2020 showed us the impacts that building in vulnerable areas and the impact that disasters have on communities. The built environment can affect both these matters significantly.
This seminar brings together two pre-eminent professionals in the space of disaster recovery and health, being Shane Fitzsimmons AFSM (former Commissioner of the Rural Fire Service in NSW, now Commissioner of Resilience NSW) and Michael Walsh (former Director-General of Queensland Health) to discuss the role of planning for resilience.
About the speakers:
Shane Fitzsimmons AFSM was appointed as the inaugural Commissioner for Resilience NSW and Deputy Secretary, Emergency Management with the Department of Premier and Cabinet from 1 May 2020. This appointment followed a distinguished career with the NSW Rural Fire Service of over 35 years. Commissioner Fitzsimmons was awarded the National Medal in 1999 and the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in 2001.
Michael Walsh was Director-General of Queensland Health from July 2015 to September 2019 and currently holds the position of Chair for the following organisations:
- Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre.
- Health Support Services, WA Health.
- Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
In 2020, Michael was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list for outstanding public service to the health sector in Queensland. Michael has a passion for organisational excellence and leading value-based teams achieving outcomes that improve the lives of all Australians.
